Psst…During the course of the interview, Bach was completely unaware of the fact that the interview was being recorded…
Hi. Welcome to Shillong! The weather has definitely been lousy…
Hi! Thanks. Yea, apparently, but it’s cool, it’s a good sleeping weather, you don’t need an air conditioner. (Laughs).
We’ve heard Minnie is unwell. How is she now?
She’s better…much better, thank you.
Oh! That’s great. Well, you were born Sebastian Philip Bierk. Why did you change it to Sebastian Bach?
It’s just a stage name I wanted to be known with. I loved the name Bach, so…. lived with it.
You are of German, Norwegian, Canadian, Scottish and French descent, and now you have an Indian connection too. How do you feel about being a true International citizen?
Uh, well, y’know, I’ve been doing this for about 25 years so I’ve always travelled and this is my first time to India so I’m really excited and that means a lot to me. It’s always interesting to come to a place I’ve never been, so it’s cool. Yeah!
Your New Jersey home was damaged by Hurricane Irene in August and several of your artefacts were destroyed. Well, I’m not going to ask you how painful this experience has left you, but would love to know how it has changed you…as a person…
Humph…Well, I’ve lived out of the suitcase ever since then, so, I’m still dealing with all of that and it’s always hard to live out of your suitcase.
You’ve lost a lot of your collections…. your father’s art, comic books, etc, were destroyed too?
Yeah a lot, but not all of it. Thankfully, my father’s artwork wasn’t damaged. That was the most precious stuff. I had that all up at a higher levels of the house y’know.
After the hurricane incident, you released your solo album….
No, I released the record like 6 months before the hurricane but a lot of the lyrics talk about what happened in a weird way.
So, there’s no plan of working with Bob Marlette again?
Well, ummm, there’s no plan right now cuz I’m just gonna be touring in America for a long time. So, ummm…once I’ve done touring, I’ll start doing another record.
Maybe in 2013?
I don’t put time on the records because it’s like you’re making something y’know. So, when it’s done, it’s done.
I know you don’t like to talk about Skid Row but the song “one good reason” from your recent album where you rage “I exist in the now/ain’t got no time for looking back/ at the jokers and the clowns, no,”… does that affirm this to any possibility of a cash cow reunion with your former Skid Row members?
You’d have to ask them cuz I’ve already said a million times that I’d do it. So, it’s upto them. I sing these songs every single night. I’ll always be the singer of Skid Row no matter, no matter what. If they do it, I’m gonna do it.
Just then the editor-in-chief of TNT interrupts and brings in his Yahama guitar
Bach- “Oh! That’s cool. Wow!”….He signs on it…
Minnie Gupta was featured in the video of ‘Kicking and Screaming’. So, will we see more of her in your upcoming videos?
She’s in a brand new video of ‘I’m Alive’. She’s on the cover as Kali Maa. She is really beautiful. Yeah!
I’ve been requested by a crazy fan of yours to ask you this question- how do you practice to improve your vocal pitch? It’s still awesome at this age…
There is an Italian vocal technique called Bel Canto which is a series of scales that literally the more you do it, the stronger it grows and it has been around for 100s of years. When I first joined Skid Row….it was in 1987; Jon Bonjovi set me with this vocal coach. That same vocal coach now teaches Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera, Tony Bennett…It’s not just heavy metal!
Tell us more about your visit to Providence school. …..
Ah! The children were wonderful… We gave them computers, clothes and uh…socks. They were so happy, they sang songs for us………..
Well, maybe you can sing a song for us then….
No, it doesn’t work like that. I’m not a monkey (Laughs)…
Your recent album featured Marilyn Manson guitarist John 5!
Did you say Marilyn Monroe? (Laughs). He plays for Rob Zombie now. He’s an amazing guitarist…
In your first solo album BRING EM BACH ALIVE, you’ve worked with Jimmy Flemion, do you think he is an under-rated musician/songwriter?
We’ve not spoken to each other for over 12 years now. He’s not really a heavy metal guy…he’s into alternative music.
Rewinding back, tell us about your experiences on the Broadway plays…
I did Jekyll and Hyde on Broadway and Rocky Horror and Jesus Christ Superstar……..Y’know, I just love singing…you get to do 8 shows a week, so there’s a lot of singing involved there. I like singing on Broadways…
What about the voice you lent for Prince Triton in Sponge Bob…..
Oh yeah! Sponge Bob and the Clash of Triton also uh! Robot Chicken…Robot Chicken! (Laughs)
Alright, this question may sound cliché, but we want to know who your inspirations are…
When I was a little boy, KISS was a gimmick. All of us loved KISS. So, we put the make-up; we were all like monsters and we all loved that. And the crazy thing is that nobody knew what they looked like without the make-up. So, as a little kid, they were so…like real live super heroes. They had their own comic books y’know, so you read stories about them…fighting Dr. Doom. I mean that was incredible; there has never been a band like that. When we were little boys, we would go see them on stage, breathing fire, spitting blood and that was nuts!
Talking about KISS, I’ve heard the story of how Rachel did not want to do the Kiss Alive/Worldwide tour in 1996 and how they turned around and eventually did the Farewell tour with KISS…that had to be even more frustrating…
(Long pause) Well, ummm….they, ummm… They didn’t probably get paid that much (Laughs!)
Any Indian band that you personally like?
Indian band? No, not really but I saw a guitar player who was really amazing at Praddy’s birthday party (Rangdap)! He was really good.
Bach- Wait! How are you gonna remember my answers?
TNT (in chorus) – It’s being recorded!
Bach- Oh! Oh! I thought you were writing an exam or something…I didn’t know
Managing Editor- Rajoo Sharma- We Indians work like this only.
